The project comprised the refurbishment of the Darwin Mall, consisting of stormwater drainage, sewerage, water supply, electrical, telecommunications, various surface pavements, three weatherproof structures, kiosk, seating, rubbish bins, bicycle racks, playground, landscaping, signage and local art and culture. The project was carried out under a head contract with the design carried out by various consultants.

The project required a great deal of planning and coordination with works carried out on a 7-day 24-hour roster allowing continual trading to all shops, public access through the mall, and with priority given to limiting the amount of noise and the safety of the general public.

Although the project was controversial in regard to design aspects and minor inconveniences resulting from the refurbishment works, the end product has been well received and appreciated by all parties.
