Sitzler Pty Ltd undertook the construction of the civil phase of the $26M Archer Zone Substation. This new 27MVA transformer provides alternative power supply and capacity to the fast growing Palmerston region which is anticipating an additional 3,700 residential sections coming on line over the next five years.

Although initially comprising a single 27MVA transformer the site has been designed for an ultimate configuration of three 27MBVA transformers plus an additional 66kV transmission line linking Archer with the Hudson Creek Substation.

The work was required to commence at the start of the 2008 wet season necessitating careful planning and management of the initial bulk earthworks. As well as the actual substation yard the contract included a 265 metre access tunnel constructed between the control building and the switchyard underneath Channel Island Road. This was undertaken by constructing 100m of temporary road around the tunnel crossing to facilitate the installation of precast tunnel sections. The tunnel incorporated a bespoke section that had to be jacked into place to avoid disturbing a high pressure gas main in the path of the tunnel.
