Gunbalanya Community Education Centre is the primary education facility for the Gunbalanya Community, providing education options at various stages of the local population of 1000 people. The upgrade works for the Centre carried out under this project involved initially three areas; construction of Multi Purpose Centre including Classroom, construction of Bus Shelter, and refurbishment of existing Administration and Canteen Building.
Further funding was provided during the project to construct a new Science Education Centre to an area on the existing site. The works package as a whole involved local input for supply of materials and general supply support, together with utilizing Darwin based subcontractors to perform the main technical works.
The Education Centre remained operational throughout the project with works being co-ordinated with school staff to ensure minimal impact to students and maintaining a safe environment at all times.
The location of Gunbalanya is situated in lands adjacent to Jabiru and is regularly isolated from road transport during the months of December through until late March. This presented significant logistical issues with ensuring access for delivery of materials and early fabrication of elements whilst road access was still available. Access restrictions to the site also required daily fly in and fly out of personnel from Darwin to Gunbalanya directly presenting another unique consideration in the completion of the works.
