The RAAF Darwin Flood Mitigation project involved the Design and Construction of stormwater drainage infrastructure to resolve local flooding issues around the 3 Expeditionary Health Squadron Detachment Darwin medical centre (3 EHS) and other surrounding units in the south western precinct of RAAF Base Darwin without adversely affecting peak stormwater flows off the Base.

The works include development of a new large OUD to divert a large portion of the upstream catchment and enlargement of existing detention basins, as well as reshaping of the ambulance bay area and other drainage, kerb and channel works around the 3EHS medical centre, MEOMS and 114MCRU precincts. The works also involved the relocation of existing AFFF contaminated stockpiled material to another location on the other side of the Base.

The project was awarded in March 2015, with the design needing to be fast tracked and works beginning across several work fronts to ensure completion of the drain prior to 2015/16 wet season. The design team needed to model various flood events, to ensure not only that the proposed design would achieve its goal, but also confirm that outflows off base through the golf course were not increased and that the amount of material needing to be excavated was optimized due to its being stockpiled on Base.

The onsite team carried out detailed contaminated soil testing throughout the works, with AFFF, asbestos and hydrocarbon contaminated material being found and disposed of off site.

The works included excavation of over 80,000 cubic metres of material, over 9km of tie wire and 2500 stars pickets being used to construct the various rock baskets for over 400 tonne of rock.

With around 45 people working on site across six different areas, 10% of whom identified as being Indigenous.
