The project involved design, construction and certification of a mini village, services infrastructure upgrades and the refurbishment of an existing hangar for Airbus’s development of its HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) program in Australia. The facility is located at the Wyndham Aerodrome in Western Australia.
In addition to the provision of accommodation for the employees, the facility contained a commercial kitchen and dining facility, office facilities and specialist workshops designed and constructed to the functional requirements of Airbus. Services works consisted of upgrading of the incoming electrical supply, site internal power and communication reticulation, perimeter lighting, waste water treatment plant, and the provision of mechanical spot cooling within the hangar. Due to the critical nature of the Airbus site operations, the facility required full generator backup redundancy as part of the electrical installation.
The existing hangar was refurbished and upgraded to incorporate communication, fire detection and electrical power.
The project was delivered in an extremely compressed timeframe with separable portion 1 being the mini village and hangar designed, constructed and certified ready for occupation in 11 weeks from contract award.
The project team employed the use of temporary switchboards and power reticulation to enable the early occupation whilst the permanent switchboards were manufactured. The project was delivered using predominantly local Western Australian companies.
