Cyclone Tracy 50th Anniversary Commemorations

Sitzler’s Reflection on Cyclone Tracy’s 50th Anniversary: A Moment of Silence

On December 9th 2024, Sitzler offices and sites across Australia paused for a minute’s silence to mark the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy.

On Christmas Day, 1974 Cyclone Tracy devasted Darwin.

We honour the 66 lives lost and we acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the emergency services, ADF, volunteers, and the broader community who came together in the aftermath to rebuild and restore our beautiful city.

How it all began

Sitzler Bros Pty Ltd (Sitzler bros) northern operations – now known as Sitzler, was formed as part of the effort to rebuild the city. Sitzler Bros, established and operating in Alice Springs at the time was asked to establish a presence in Darwin by the Darwin Reconstruction Committee and the NT Department of Transport & Works.

Sitzler went onto play a key role in the reconstruction works, helping the city rise from the ruins and establish the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy of construction and community support.

As we reflect on the strength and resilience that defines Darwin, we take great pride in our role in the community. We are honoured to have been part of this remarkable journey and will forever honour the 66 lives lost and the efforts of everyone who helped rebuild our city.
